Miranza joins glaucoma prevention with screenings in various cities across Spain
We are joining, once again, World Glaucoma Week 2026 with an awareness and early detection campaign for this silent and potentially irreversible disease.
During this campaign, Miranza will offer free intraocular pressure tests at several of its clinics as well as in public spaces such as streets, shopping centers, and sports clubs from March 2 to 9. The goal is to promote early detection and raise awareness about the importance of eye health.
“Detecting glaucoma early is essential to protecting vision. With this campaign, we want to provide the public with practical resources that help prevent avoidable blindness,” emphasizes Ramón Berra, General Director of Miranza.
Glaucoma: the silent enemy of vision
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. It is estimated that nearly half of those affected are unaware of their condition, as early stages may show no obvious symptoms. Detecting it in time allows its progression to be slowed through effective treatments that preserve vision.
Proper ophthalmological monitoring also helps prevent acute glaucoma attacks, which can occur occasionally and are very painful, as well as causing sudden vision loss, eye redness, halos and flashes of light, nausea, and vomiting. Miranza’s campaign focuses on direct action and education by measuring intraocular pressure—the main risk factor—and providing information on how to recognize warning signs.
Warning Signs
Glaucoma can progress without obvious discomfort. Some signs to watch for include gradual loss of peripheral vision, seeing halos around lights (especially noticeable when driving at night), and difficulty seeing in the dark, which may indicate progressive damage to the optic nerve.
Prevention and Management
Although glaucoma has no cure, regular eye examinations can detect abnormalities early. People with risk factors—such as being over 60, having a family history, or high myopia or hyperopia—should undergo routine check-ups.
There are treatments to slow the disease’s progression, including eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, with a balanced diet and regular exercise, also contributes to good eye health.
Miranza will hold screenings and activities in several cities across Spain, including Santiago de Compostela, Alicante, Bilbao, Tenerife, Mallorca, and Barcelona. For more information on how to access the screenings, visit the official campaign page: https://miranza.es/semana-mundial-del-glaucoma/
