Miranza expands its surgical capacity in Bilbao with new operating rooms at Begoña
We continue to grow in Bilbao with the opening of a new state-of-the-art surgical area at Miranza Clínica Begoña. The new facilities include two operating rooms dedicated to outpatient major surgery (OMS) and refractive surgery, further strengthening our healthcare capacity in the Biscayan capital.
This expansion marks another step forward in our commitment to technological innovation and medical excellence, enabling us to optimize care times, improve surgical workflows, and expand the range of ophthalmological procedures performed at the clinic.
In addition, the new spaces will help reinforce the Group’s surgical activity in Bilbao, where Miranza already operates two additional operating rooms at Miranza COI, which are currently undergoing renovation.
Ricardo Mateos, CEO of Miranza, highlighted during the inauguration that “this expansion represents another step in the Group’s strategy of investing in technological innovation and medical excellence. The new operating rooms will allow us to offer increasingly precise, safe, and personalized treatments for our patients.”
Meanwhile, Dr.ÍñigoCorcóstegui, Medical Director of MiranzaClínicaBegoña, emphasized that the addition of this new infrastructure “allows us to continue advancing our commitment to medical excellence and to care for a greater number of patients using cutting-edge technology.”

New Infrastructure for More Advanced Ophthalmology
One of the new operating rooms is dedicated to outpatient major surgery (OMS), a modality that allows more complex procedures to be performed without the need for hospital admission, as all surgeries at Miranza are outpatient procedures. This model enables a more comfortable recovery for patients, who can return home on the same day of surgery while receiving specialized medical follow-up.
The second operating room in the new surgical area is focused on refractive surgery to correct visual defects such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, using advanced techniques based on high-precision laser technology. These procedures allow many patients to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
The addition of the new operating rooms at Miranza Clínica Begoña will allow the center to accommodate a greater number of procedures, which until now had been concentrated in the operating rooms at Miranza COI. In this regard, Dr.Ioana Romero, Medical Director of the latter center, stated that the new facilities “will further strengthen the already close collaboration between both teams, combining efforts to improve patient care and optimize the Group’s resources.”
Miranza Clínica Begoña has been part of Miranza since November 2021. Since then, the Bilbao-based clinic has driven a progressive process of technological modernization and growth, continuously improving its healthcare capacity.
Located in a three-story building next to the Basilica of Begoña, the clinic has more than three decades of experience, and its medical team is a benchmark in retina, cornea, refractive surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, dry eye treatment, and aesthetic surgery. One of its key strengths is its medical leadership, which embodies the tradition and excellence in ophthalmology of six generations of specialists under the direction of Dr. Íñigo Corcóstegui.
In the Basque Country, Miranza operates through several ophthalmology centers located across the region’s three provincial capitals. Specifically, the Group includes MiranzaClínicaBegoñaand Miranza COI (Bilbao), as well as MiranzaBegitek (San Sebastián, Beasain, and Zarautz) and MiranzaÓkular (Vitoria-Gasteiz).
