Miranza performs the first simultaneous visual acuity test at a football stadium
For the first time in Spain, Miranza has performed a vision test at a football stadium. The pinhole test took place at the La Rosaleda football stadium in Malaga for those attending the match between Málaga CF and Real Zaragoza, which was held on Sunday, 26 January.
The pinhole test is a simple, albeit highly useful diagnostic test, which allows patients’ visual acuity to be assessed quickly.
How does the pinhole test work?
An opaque surface with one or more holes 1 to 1.5 mm in diameter is simply placed in front of the patient’s eye, while covering the other eye, through which the patient must read an optotype or eye chart, which consists of letters in progressively smaller lines of type from top to bottom). If vision improves when looking through the hole, there is probably a refractive disorder, such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. On the other hand, if there is no improvement and the patient already had poor vision before undergoing the test, this could suggest more serious eye disorders.
Those attending the match at La Rosaleda were given cardboard “pinhole glasses”, which they could use at half-time to perform the vision test by looking through the small hole at the eye chart which is screened on the video scoreboard, first with one eye and then with the other.
Visual acuity test to promote prevention
With this groundbreaking initiative, we are highlighting our responsibility with regard to eye health, taking prevention and vision care to new stages and bringing them closer to the public in a unique way. “We want people to become aware of the importance of taking care of their eyesight. Visual acuity is essential for everyday life, and a simple test such as a pinhole can provide a first clue to possible vision issues”, says Ramón Berra, CEO of Miranza.
Early detection allows us to apply more effective treatments, in order to avoid significant vision loss or major complications, thus improving people’s quality of life. Emilio Espejo de los Riscos, medical director at Miranza Málaga, the clinic that carried out this test, states: “We wanted to provide all attendees with a quick and easy way to assess their visual acuity, as early diagnosis of any eye disorder can make all the difference.”
Thus, the promotion of sports as well as health and visual wellbeing met at the La Rosaleda stadium.
