Miranza strengthens its presence in Portugal with a clinic in Guimaraes
This is a new center in the area of influence of Porto, a city where we have been present since last May
The integration of the Oftalmocenter clinic in Guimaraes into the Group represents a new step in Miranza’s growth strategy in Portugal and strengthens the creation of a center of ophthalmological excellence in the north of the neighboring country.
With this acquisition, Miranza adds its second clinic in Portugal, reinforcing network-based work together with Miranza COANTAS in Porto, which joined the Group in May 2025. The collaboration between both centers will make it possible to expand the service portfolio, improve patient access to advanced treatments, and enhance operational efficiency in the Porto metropolitan area.
A reference center
Oftalmocenter is currently the only monographic ophthalmology center in the city, with a team of six ophthalmologists, three optometrists, and a 150-square-meter building with expansion capacity. Its integration will allow Miranza to increase its care offering and refer surgical interventions and complex procedures to Miranza COANTAS, which has operating rooms and state-of-the-art technology.
The clinic was founded and developed by Dr. Luís Manuel Rodrigo Gonçalves, one of the most renowned physicians in the Guimaraes region, with more than three decades of experience that have enabled him to build an extensive career in cataract surgery, medical retina, and high myopia.
“It is an honor to welcome a professional of Dr. Gonçalves’s prestige into our network,” says Ramón Berra, CEO of Miranza. “His role is key to consolidating the clinical project in northern Portugal, where Miranza aims to continue growing alongside the best specialists”, he adds.
Ophtalmology hub
Following the incorporation in May 2025 of Clínica das Antas (now Miranza COANTAS), a center led by Prof. Manuel Monteiro, a national benchmark in cataract and corneal surgery, Miranza is now moving forward with the creation of an ophthalmology hub in the Northern region. This hub is based on a clinical model with unified diagnostic, surgical, and care quality protocols; optimization of the technology and surgical capacity of Miranza COANTAS; joint medical training and updates; and enhanced access to premium ophthalmology in a new area of influence with more than 150,000 inhabitants.
“Portugal is a key market in our Iberian strategy”, explains Ricardo Mateos, Miranza’s corporate development director. “The combination of Dr. Gonçalves’s talent, Professor Monteiro’s clinical strength, and Miranza’s capabilities enables us to offer a distinctive project for both patients and professionals”, he adds.
