Is there a link between maintaining a healthy diet and eye health? The answer is yes. Although diet alone cannot cure vision problems, it is associated with a lower risk of developing certain eye diseases.

Dr. Teresa Iradier, a Dry Eye specialist at IMO Grupo Miranza Madrid, explains: “As the years go by, inadequate intake of essential nutrients can lead to various problems related to eye health. Therefore, to promote long-term well-being, it is essential to adopt healthy eating habits from now on.”

High consumption of refined products, trans fats, processed meats, or alcohol can contribute to metabolic problems as well as deterioration of certain eye structures. For this reason, Dr. Iradier points out that “regulating the intake of foods that can harm health, while prioritizing more nutritious options, is a fundamental measure to protect vision in the long term.”

Diet plays a key role in eye health by providing vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids that help protect the retina, prevent damage, and maintain proper eye function over the years. Miranza experts have selected seven foods that provide essential nutrients to care for our eyesight:

  1. Carrot: a classic. You have surely heard many times about its multiple benefits for our eyes. It is rich in vitamin A, which is crucial for retinal health and night vision; as well as lutein and vitamin E, which help prevent cataracts.
  2. Oily fish: foods such as salmon, sardines, or tuna are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA). These lipids are essential for proper retinal function and have been shown to help prevent dry eye and reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
  3. Nuts: walnuts, almonds, and pistachios provide large amounts of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that protects eye cells from free radical damage and may delay the formation of cataracts. Some also contain zinc, which helps maintain retinal health.
  4. Citrus fruits and strawberries: oranges, lemons, kiwis, grapefruits, and strawberries are known for their high vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content. This vitamin is a key antioxidant that helps protect vision from oxidative damage and is essential for the formation and maintenance of collagen, a structural protein found in the cornea.
  5. Egg: a very complete food for eye health, especially the yolk. It is rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that act as a natural sun filter, protecting the macula from blue light damage. It also contains zinc and vitamin A.
  6. Red bell peppers: whether raw or cooked, they are one of the richest sources of vitamin C per serving. As we know, this antioxidant helps protect the blood vessels in the eyes, reducing the risk of cataracts. They also provide vitamins A and E.
  7. Leafy green vegetables: spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and broccoli are true superfoods for eye health. They are among the richest sources of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which concentrate in the macula of the eye to protect it from harmful light.

In this regard, Miranza specialists remind us that these foods are beneficial, but not miraculous. If you truly want to take care of your eye health, it is best to have eye check-ups at least once a year.

“Only regular check-ups allow us to detect changes early and prevent them from developing into more serious conditions, since many eye diseases do not present symptoms in their early stages. Regular professional monitoring is essential to act early and protect long-term visual health”, concludes Dr. Iradier.
