eople over the age of 60 account for 64% of suspected cases of retinal disease detected during the early detection campaign for retinal problems launched by Miranza<\/a> and carried out over the past two weeks. Specifically, 44 of the 69 people in whom a suspected condition was detected were over 60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign provided screening for 573 people<\/strong> in 14 locations where Miranza has clinics. The average rate of suspected conditions recorded across the participating clinics was 12%, while, among all those screened, 69 showed signs compatible with a potential eye disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among people with suspected eye disease, the most common conditions were glaucoma, accounting for 32% of cases (22 people); diabetic retinopathy<\/a>, at 20% (14 people); and AMD<\/a> (age-related macular degeneration), at 13% (9 people). The remaining 35%, or 24 people, presented other eye abnormalities or conditions, including drusen, as well as vitreous and retinal tears or detachments, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although glaucoma is not technically a retinal disease, it has also been included in the campaign results because it affects the optic nerve, the structure that connects the retina to the brain. AMD and diabetic retinopathy, meanwhile, are among the most common retinal diseases and can cause significant vision loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to age, other factors can increase the risk of developing eye and retinal diseases<\/strong>. These include personal and family ocular history, high blood pressure and certain pre-existing conditions, such as myopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those in whom a suspected condition was detected, 35% had myopia (24 people), 25% had high blood pressure (17 people), and 7% had a family history of retinal disease (5 people).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commitment to prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Miranza launched this early detection campaign to mark World Retina Day<\/strong>, which this year was held on Sunday, September 27, coinciding with World Retinitis Pigmentosa Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between September 14 and 25, early detection units at various Group clinics offered free eye examinations to the public in Alicante, Madrid, Albacete, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santiago de Compostela, Benidorm and Barcelona, among other cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The screening consisted of a fundus examination <\/strong>using state-of-the-art portable equipment. Based on the initial results, ophthalmologists will advise people in whom a suspected condition has been detected so that they can undergo more comprehensive follow-up and, where necessary, receive an early diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, the campaign took prevention into the community, bringing eye health services closer to people who do not regularly attend ophthalmology appointments. Almost all the screenings were carried out outside the clinics, in shopping centres and on the streets of some of the participating cities, in addition to examinations offered at Miranza centres themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The role of the retina<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The retina is the structure of the eye responsible for converting light into images<\/strong> and therefore plays a fundamental role in vision and quality of life. Miranza specialists explain that \u201cthrough the retina, our brain is able to understand what is happening in the outside world. This is why conditions affecting the retina are considered serious and can lead to partial or total blindness if they are not detected at an early stage\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AMD is one of the main causes of retinal-related vision loss and can cause blurred vision in the central part of the visual field<\/strong>, as well as the perception of wavy or distorted lines. Diabetic retinopathy, which affects the retinal blood vessels in people with diabetes, is also common, as are macular holes, an opening in the centre of the retina that can impair vision, and retinal detachment, among other conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a> In this regard, Miranza’s retinal specialists emphasise the importance of attending regular ophthalmological examinations, which can help detect potential abnormalities at an early stage and, when necessary, establish appropriate treatment. Monitoring is particularly important in the presence of risk factors such as age and family history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lifestyle and eye health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Specialists also stress the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which is associated with healthier ageing and better eye health. Recommendations include not smoking, maintaining a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, and avoiding exposure to the sun without adequate protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
