But eye health can also run in the family. Many conditions that affect our vision have a genetic origin.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing our eye health history and taking early action can make a difference in slowing the progression of certain conditions\u2014or even in detecting them before the first symptoms appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f29075fbca6135217ebe2edb5e8959e5\" style=\"color:#71cc98\"><strong><strong><strong>Genetically based eye diseases<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some refractive errors, such as myopia, and more complex eye conditions, like glaucoma or keratoconus, can have a significant hereditary component. That\u2019s why our specialists emphasize the importance of paying attention to these cases and taking action early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Refractive eye errors: Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism<\/strong><br><br><strong>Myopia <\/strong>already affects<strong> a quarter of the adult population. <\/strong>It has a clear<strong> genetic component<\/strong>, especially when one or both parents are nearsighted, although modern habits\u2014such as excessive screen time and lack of outdoor activity\u2014also contribute to its development.<br><br><strong>Hyperopia<\/strong>, on the other hand, is a condition that causes blurred near vision and, in some cases, distance vision as well. It often has a <strong>hereditary origin and is more likely to occur when there is a family history<\/strong>. A similar pattern is seen with astigmatism, a defect in the curvature of the cornea that distorts vision and is also commonly passed down through genetics.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Glaucoma<\/strong><\/strong><br><br>This condition is <strong>one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness<\/strong> and can progress silently for years, making early detection difficult. It often has a strong genetic component. In fact, if a close family member has had it, the risk of developing it increases <strong>tenfold<\/strong>. Moreover, there are hereditary forms of glaucoma, such as:<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Congenital glaucoma<\/strong>, which\u00a0typically\u00a0appears at birth\u00a0or in early\u00a0childhood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Juvenile glaucoma<\/strong>, which\u00a0is\u00a0diagnosed\u00a0between\u00a0the\u00a0ages\u00a0of 5 and 20 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>Keratoconus<\/strong><\/strong><br><br>This\u00a0disease causes the cornea to\u00a0become\u00a0thinner and take\u00a0on a cone-like\u00a0shape, severely\u00a0affecting\u00a0vision. It\u00a0often\u00a0progresses\u00a0rapidly, especially\u00a0when\u00a0it\u00a0appears at an\u00a0early\u00a0age, making\u00a0early\u00a0detection crucial. Knowing\u00a0if\u00a0there\u00a0is a family\u00a0history can help\u00a0identify\u00a0early\u00a0or\u00a0subclinical cases and prevent\u00a0complications, especially in individuals\u00a0considering refractive surgery.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Hereditary retinal dystrophies, such as retinitis pigmentosa<\/strong><\/strong><br><br><strong>Retinitis pigmentosais a rare diseaseaffecting 1 in every 3,000 people, butitistheleading cause ofgeneticblindness in adults<\/strong>. It\u00a0progressively\u00a0damages\u00a0the light-sensitive cells in the retina, especially\u00a0the\u00a0rods, initially\u00a0affecting\u00a0peripheral and night\u00a0vision. Over time, it can also\u00a0compromise central vision. Although\u00a0multiple\u00a0genetic\u00a0mutations cause it, a family\u00a0history\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0always\u00a0present. Early\u00a0detection\u00a0allows\u00a0for\u00a0intervention\u00a0before\u00a0the\u00a0disease\u00a0progresses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/diagnostico-genetico.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/diagnostico-genetico.jpg 740w, https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/diagnostico-genetico-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to genetic diagnosis, it is now possible to <strong>detect some of these hereditary diseases\u2014which mostly affect the retina\u2014<\/strong>early on. At Miranza, this study, performed using a blood sample from the patient and their family members, complements clinical tests and allows us to understand how the disease is inherited, that is, the pattern of inheritance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the inheritance is dominant, one parent has the condition and can pass it on to half of their children. If it is recessive, both parents are carriers without symptoms, and the disease only appears if both pass on the mutated gene. If it is linked to the X chromosome, it is usually the mother who transmits it, but male children are the ones who develop the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.es\/equipo-medico\/esther-pomares\/\">Dr. Esther Pomares, Miranza\u2019s R&amp;D<\/a> coordinator,<strong> explains that \u201cthanks to genetic diagnosis, we can identify the cause of more than 50 hereditary eye diseases<\/strong>.
