It is a very common lesion that takes the form of a <strong>reddish pimple, boil or lump on the outside or inside of the eyelashes.<\/strong>\u00a0Although there are ways of preventing them, they are sometimes unavoidable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out from the <a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/our-ophthalmology-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Miranza specialists<\/strong><\/a> about certain keys regarding <strong>styes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why have I got a stye?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>stye<\/strong>\u00a0appears due to a <strong>bacterial infection in the glands of the eyelids <\/strong>(the <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> bacteria). \u201cSometimes, the glands inside the fold of skin covering the eyes produce a dense oil instead of a very fluid oil, which cannot be released through the edge of the eyelid and remains inside\u201d, explains <a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/our-team\/ophthalmological-specialists\/marina-rodriguez-tirado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Dr Marina Rodr\u00edguez Tirado<\/strong><\/a>, ophthalmologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/our-eye-clinics\/miranza-ioa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Miranza IOA<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/our-eye-clinics\/miranza-ophthalteam-madrid\/\">Miranza Ophthalteam<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8aca7216acb2a694e0e7b323dac15b74\" style=\"color:#73cf91\"><strong>The stye can also be associated to poor eyelid hygiene and to different eye or dermatological conditions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ocular disorders<\/strong>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/pathologies\/blepharitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>blepharitis<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(inflammation of the eyelid margins, often associated with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/treatments\/dry-eye-treatments-during-a-consultation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">d<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/tratamientos\/ojo-seco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ry eye<\/strong><\/a>).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skin conditions<\/strong>, such as\u00a0<strong>acne and rosacea.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They might sometimes appear as a reaction to <strong>stress and hormonal changes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although on other occasions, \u201cthey appear for no apparent reason\u201d, explains <strong>Dr Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"856\" src=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dra.-Rodriguez-R-1024x856.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-129592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dra.-Rodriguez-R-1024x856.jpg.webp 1024w, https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dra.-Rodriguez-R-1024x856.jpg-300x251.webp 300w, https:\/\/miranza.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dra.-Rodriguez-R-1024x856.jpg-768x642.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I know if I have a stye?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite not normally being a serious infectious process, a stye can be <strong>very unpleasant and even painful.<\/strong>&nbsp;As well as its appearance in the form of a pimple or lump on the inside or outside of the eyelid, you might notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Itchiness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign body sensation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tearing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensitivity to light.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who does it affect?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It often affects people of any age, although mostly <strong>children and adolescents<\/strong>. Along these lines, <strong>Dr Rodr\u00edguez\u00a0<\/strong>says that a stye can also hide a <strong>refractive error\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/pathologies\/myopia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>myopia,<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/pathologies\/astigmatism\/\"><strong>astigmatism<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.es\/patologias\/operacion-hipermetropia-cirugia-refractiva\/\"><strong>hyperop<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/miranza.es\/en\/pathologies\/hyperopia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ia<\/a><\/strong>). \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a child has to make an effort to change how they open their eyelid in order to see better means that the fat is being squeezed more than necessary and it accumulates. This is when styes occur\u201d, she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When should I see a specialist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is always <strong>wise to see the ophthalmologist<\/strong>&nbsp;when you have a stye because it might be the start of gland dysfunction and, in the future, the&nbsp;<strong>cause of dry eye<\/strong>\u201d, indicates <strong>Dr Marina Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, expert in Dry Eye at the Miranza IOA and Miranza Ophthalteam clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, although no usual, the lesion could spread to other glands and tissue in the eye and could become\u00a0<strong>chronic and turn into a cyst<\/strong> which is sometimes mistaken for a stye, known as a <strong>chalazion.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And how can it be treated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn these severe, resistant cases when it has become chronic, a <strong>simple surgical intervention might be required to remove it<\/strong>\u201d, adds\u00a0<strong>Dr Rodr\u00edguez.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c07d9faf5b61a62da01adfa544149e6e\" style=\"color:#73cf91\"><strong>In most cases, however, it normally disappears on its own within one to two weeks.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To speed up the process, heat should be applied to encourage the <strong>inflamed glands of the eyelids to dilate and for the stye to drain<\/strong>. Therefore, <strong>massaging and cleaning the eyelid<\/strong>\u00a0using warm compresses on the area is recommended, in addition to <strong>antibiotic and steroid-based creams <\/strong>prescribed by a specialist. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever had a stye?
